RESPECT FOR

THE FLAG

Title 36, Chapter 10 pertains to

patriotic customs and observances.

These Laws were

supplemented by Executive

Orders and Presidential Proclamations.

#176. RESPECT FOR THE

FLAG.

No disrespect should be shown

to the flag of the United States of

America; the flag should not be

dipped to any person or thing.

Regimental colors, State flags,

and organization or institutional

flags are to be dipped as a mark

of honor.

(a) The flag should never be

displayed with the union down,

except as a dire distress in

instances of extreme danger to

life or property.

(b) The flag should never touch

anything beneath it, such as the

ground, the floor, water or

merchandise.

(c) The flag should never be

carried flat or horizontally, but

always aloft and free.

(d) The flag should never be

used as a wearing apparel,

bedding, or drapery. It should

never be festooned, drawn back,

nor up, in folds, but always

allowed to fall free. Bunting of

blue, white and red, always

arranged with the blue above, the

white in the middle and the red

below, should be used for

covering a speaker’s desk,

draping the front of the platform,

and for decoration in general.

(e) The flag should never be

fastened, displayed, used or

stored in such a manner as to be

easily torn, soiled or damaged in

any way.

(f) The flag should never be used

as a covering for a ceiling.

(g) The flag should never have

placed upon it, nor any part of it,

nor attached to it any mark,

insignia, letter, word figure,

design, picture, or drawing of any

nature.

(h) The flag should never be

used as a receptacle for receiving,

holding, carrying, or delivering

anything.

(i) The flag should never be used

for advertising purposes in any

manner whatsoever. It should not

be embroidered on such articles

such as cushions or handkerchiefs

and the like, printed or

otherwise impressed on paper

napkins or boxes or anything that

designed for temporary use and

discard. Advertising signs should

not be fastened to a staff or

halyard from which the flag is

flown.

(j) No part of the flag should ever

be used asa costume or athletic

uniform. However, a flag patch

may be affixed to the uniform of

military personnel, firemen,

policemen, and members of

Patriotic Organizations. The flag

represents a living country and is

itself considered a living thing.

Therefore, the lapel flag pin being

in replica, should be worn on the

left lapel near the heart.

(k) The flag, when it is in such

condition that it is no longer a

fitting emblem for display, should

be destroyed in a dignified way,

preferably by burning.

WHAT IS PATRIOTISM?

“Love for and devotion to

one’s country”

Many things have been said

and written on the subject of

Patriotism, some of them

concerning the exploitation or

abuse of patriotic feeling.

Perhaps the most famous if

misunderstood quotation on

the subject was a throwaway

remark by Dr. Samuel

Johnson, the 18th century

English wit, and lexicographer.

It was he who said that

“patriotism is the last refuge

of a scoundrel.” That is

something that can certainly

be true, though the good

doctor was likely referring to

the Patriotic Party in the

British Parliament of the time.

He himself wrote an approving

essay entitled “The

Patriot,” and defined “patriot”

approvingly in his Great

Dictionary of 1755 as “one

whose ruling passion is love

of his country.”

Below are a few quotatations

about America & Patirotism

from a variety of persons who

tend to see patriotic feeling as

something more than a mere

ancestor worship or tribal

identity. Some of them are

famous, others are today

obscure. But their words

speak to what it is to be an

American patriot today.

MARK TWAIN - “ Each man

must for himself alone decide

what is right and what is

wrong, which course is

patriotic and which isn’t. You

cannot shirk this and be a

man.”

THEODORE ROOSEVELT -

“From the very beginning our

people have markedly combined

practical for affairs with

power of devotion to an ideal.

The lack of either quality

would have rendered the

other of small value.”

Adlai Stevenson - Patriotism...

is not short, frenzied outbursts

of emotion, but the tranquil

and steady dedication of a

lifetime.

Elmer Davis - This nation will

remain the land of the free

only so long as it is the home

of the brave.

Hamilton Fish - If our country

is worth dying for in time of

war let us resolve that it is

truly worth living for in time of

peace.

~Lee Greenwood - And I’m

proud to be an American,

where at least I know I’m free.

And I won’t forget the men

who died,

who gave that right to me.

Thomas Jefferson - The

cement of this union is the

heart-blood of every American.

Woodrow Wilson - Some

Americans need hyphens in

their names, because only

part of them has come over;

but when the whole man has

come over, heart and thought

and all, the hyphen drops of

its own weight out of his

name.

Samuel Adams - “The liberties

of our country, the freedom of

our civil Constitution, are

worth defending at all hazards;

and it is our duty to

defend them against all

attacks. We have received

them as a fair inheritance

from our worthy ancestors:

they purchased them for us

with toil and danger and

expense of treasure and

blood, and transmitted them

to us with care and diligence.

It will bring an everlasting

mark of infamy on the present

generation, enlightened as it

is, if we should suffer them to

be wrested from us by

violence without a struggle, or

to be cheated out of them by

the artifices of false and

designing men.”

Benjamin Franklin,- “Democracy

is two wolves and a lamb

voting on what to have for

lunch. Liberty is a well-armed

lamb contesting the vote!”

Benjamin Franklin - “They that

can give up essential liberty to

purchase a little temporary

safety deserve neither liberty

or safety.”

Now given this list above do

you concider yourself a True

Patriot, one who is an American

first and foremost without

allegiance to any other

country but this one? Do you

believe that the US Constitution

is the supreme law of the

land and any law made that is

not inline with the Constitution

is null and void? Are you

willing to stand up against

those who try to destroy our

Liberties?

MilitaryForPaul.com is a group of

military service men & women

and veterans that support the

candidacy of Ron Paul for

President. It is our goal to

advocate for Ron Paul both within

and outside of the military

community. We believe Ron Paul

is the only candidate running for

President that is transparent and

honest to the U.S. military. We

believe he’s the only candidate

with the right combination of

experience and principle for the

job. As members of the United

States Military, we swore to

uphold the Constitution of the

United States and we believe Ron

Paul is the only candidate that

follows the Constitution and fights

for both economic and personal

freedom.

U.S. Military Members

That Support Ron Paul

For President

Dale Ritchey - (Army Veteran)

Comments:

I served with C 1/39th FA Airborne

during the Persian Gulf War.I’m

proud to stand with Ron Paul, a true

American patriot.

David Barry - (Army Veteran)

Comments:

During my tour in Afghanistan, I

became disillusioned at the fact that

while I was trying to fight for

freedom abroad, the US was loosing

freedoms faster than I could keep

track. Ron Paul renewed my hope,

and the hope of many soldiers with

me.

Patrick Bushman - (Active Army)

Comments:

I took an oath to support and defend

the Constitution of the United States

against all enemies, forign and

domestic; that I would bear true faith

and allegiance to the same. In order

to do this in good conscience, I must

support the only true Constitutionalist

in this race. I spent a year in Iraq;

I’m no coward and I love my

country. That is why I want to see

this great man, Ron Paul, return our

country to one we can be proud of

again.

John Anderson - (Marines Veteran)

Comments:

Ron Paul is the only option the

United States has if it is to remain a

free country.

Brandon Lloyd - (Army National

Guard)

Comments:

Either we vote The Honorable Dr.

Paul into the White House in ’08 or

we’ll continue to see this once great

nation slip away.

Josh McNattin - (Marines Veteran)

Comments:

Only Ron Paul keeps the best

interests of the troops and the

common citizen in mind with his

foreign policy. To fight for honor

means fighting for the right reasons,

not simply to try and justify a

conflict fought ignobly until you’re

the last man standing. There is no

honor in that.

Mike Toles - (Army Veteran)

Comments:

4th Infantry Division. I support Ron

Paul for President, a true American

hero and patriot.

Mike Bender - (Air Force Retired)

Comments:

Ron Paul is the only candidate who

honors his oath to the Constitution

as we do. This retired MSgt supports

Ron Paul for president in 2008!

Bryan Gray - (Navy Veteran)

Comments:

I believe so strongly in a Constitutional

government I have contributed

$2300 to Ron Paul’s campaign. This

donation isn’t a gift it is my

investment in freedom.

Ryan Murphy - (Army Veteran)

Comments:

This is one proud former NCO

infantyman that is delighted to vote

for Cong. Paul. It is way past time to

have someone overseeing the Armed

Forces who actually values the lives

of service personel instead of

viewing them as so many toy

soldiers to be scattered across hell’s

half acre.

Jason - (Active Air Force)

Comments:

We swore an oath to protect the

constitution, there’s no better man

for the job!

Brian - (Army Veteran)

Comments:

I support Ron Paul, because he

speaks the truth. His service record

in the military and in Congress speak

for themselves.

Benjamin - (Navy Reserve)

Comments:

We need to take our oath to defend

and uphold the constitution

seriously...vote RON PAUL!

Aaron Williams - (Active Army)

Comments:

With the current regime of politicians

in power stripping us of our

constitutional freedoms and liberties,

fighting terrorism around the globe

is a moot point. In effect who needs

terrorists when those who hate

freedom are elected here at home.

I’ve been following Ron Paul before

my first tour in Iraq during OIF II.

I’m now serving my second tour of

duty in Iraq, and Ron Paul is running

for president. The Constitution and

this troop is counting on him to

restore the foundation of America

which has been chipped away for the

better part of a century by the

political status quo.

Caroline - (Navy Veteran)

Comments:

Navy.Radioman. (Husband: Navy

Vietnam Combat Vet; Mother of

Navy Iraq Vet). Never in the history

of our country has an election been

so crucial. Our fallen did not die to

bring us, the nation and the people,

to ruin. We must spread the word

about Ron Paul that this is not about

party politics! We must come against

those who are protecting their own

interests, while actively helping to

destroy the lives and livelihoods of

our citizens. What good is their “nest

egg” when the roots of the tree it sits

in, are dying? It will be a fight.

Active Duty/Veterans unite!

Alex Hickey - (Active Army)

Comments:

I just returned from my second yearlong

deployment to Iraq. It is time to

leave Iraq now...THANK GOD for

Ron Paul and his dedication to true

Republican ideals of non-interventionism,

the rule of law and the

Constitution. WE WANT OUR

NATION BACK!

Christopher Sullivan - (Active

Marines)

Comments:

Ron Paul stands for the true freedom

that I signed up to defend. He is the

only candidate on either side who

even mentions the Constitution,

which I took an oath to support and

defend, and how we need to get back

to it. Those who believe in true

liberty will surely find themselves

aligned with Ron Paul.

Mark Farris - (Active Army)

Comments:

Ron Paul is the only candidate that

supports my oath to defend the

Constitution.

David Gillie - (Navy Reserve)

Comments:

As the first American citizen in my

family, I attach a lot of importance to

my service to the Constitution of the

United States. In 18 years’ service I

have never betrayed my oath.

Congressman Paul’s fidelity to his

oath is, sadly, remarkable in a

Washington drowned in cynical

corruption. I look forward with great

satisfaction to giving him my vote

for President of the United States.

LCDR David R. Gillie, USN

Christine - (Navy Veteran)

Comments:

I believe Ron Paul will work to

return this country to a Constitutional

Republic that we can be proud

of once more. This is our last chance

to save America.

Neal Ross - (Air Force Veteran)

Comments:

I am a 13 yr. veteran of the U.S. Air

Force and I fully endorse Ron Paul

for President as he is the only

candidate who appears to have even

the slightest understanding and

willingness to govern according to

the principles upon which our nation

was founded, and so many of our

brave veterans fought and died to

protect.

Judy Collins - (Air Force Veteran)

Comments:

I served in the USAF Nurse Corp

and served in the Philippines during

the Vietnam war era. Ron Paul is the

only candidate worthy of my vote

from either Democrats or Republicans.

He is a patriot and super

statesman who will restore our

precious rights and the state of the

republic.
